The Texas Legislature established the Family Medicine Resident's Rural Rotation in 1989. It is statutorily mandated that all accredited Texas family medicine residency programs provide residents with an opportunity to participate in a one-month rotation in a rural setting.
Rural rotations are supported by Family Medicine Residency program funds, as required by a rider in the Appropriations Act. Both the resident and the residency program receive funding under the program. However, the rural supervisors serve as volunteers and are not compensated for their services.
September 1, 2006, the Faculty Development Center assumed responsibility for the administration of the Family Medicine Resident's Rural Rotation (FMRRR) Program. The Center developed and implemented an electronic evaluation process for the program in order to track past participants of this program. This data will be used to evaluate the impact the FMRRR has on Texas rural medicine.
